सुंदरवन नाम के गांव में एक सुंदर तालाब था और उस तालाब में एक कछुआ रहता था। उस तालाब के नजदीक दो हंस भी रहते थे, जो रोजाना उस तालाब में पानी पीने के लिए जाते थे, जिससे उन तीनों में अच्छी मित्रता हो गई थी। लेकिन लगातार सूखा पड़ने के कारण तालाब में पानी कम होने लगा, जिससे हंस और कछुआ चिंतित हो गए और इस बारे में बातचीत कर रहे थे तो कछुए को एक विचार आया और उसने हंस को एक नया तालाब ढूंढने के लिए कहा। कुछ दिनों की कड़ी मेहनत के बाद हंसों को एक नया तालाब मिल गया जो पानी से भरा हुआ था। वे खुशखबरी लेकर कछुए के पास जाते हैं और कहते हैं, दोस्त, हमने आपके सुझाव अनुसार एक नया पानी से भरा हुआ तालाब खोज लिया है, लेकिन वह पहाड़ी के दूसरी तरफ है। आप वहां जाएंगे कैसे? कछुए ने जवाब दिया, मेरे पास इसके लिए भी एक समाधान है। मैं एक लंबी लकड़ी को अपने मुंह में बिल्कुल कस के पकडलूँगा, जिसे बाएं और दाएं से पकडकर तुम मुझे आसानी से अपने साथ उडा सकते हो। और इस तय योजना के अनुसार हंस कछुए को लेकर उड़ जाते हैं। रास्ते में जब लोग हंस के साथ कछुए को उडते देखते हैं तो हंस की प्रशंसाकरने लगते हैं। लेकिन कछुए को यह बात पसंद नहीं आती है और वह लोगों को बताना चाहता है कि यह उसका विचार था और बताने के लिए वह जैसे ही अपना मुंह खोलता है तो लकडी पर उसकी पकड़ छूट जाती है और बहुत ऊंचाई से गिरने के कारण वह मर जाता है। शिक्षा अहंकार में एक बुद्धिमान व्यक्ति भी गलती कर बैठता है।
